Read More clear Thank you for visiting Crossroads’ website. We want to make sure you are part of the experience. Ask your child about school each and every day. We also want to hear from you. If you have concerns, questions, or suggestions which can help make Crossroads a better place feel free to contact me at the school. If something is happening at school that is causing your child to be unhappy, we want to know about that as well. We want every student to enjoy their time at Crossroads. The best way for that to happen is for the school and the home to share information back and forth. Let’s make 2019-2020 a great year for our students! CROSSROADS SCHOOL STUDENT & GUARDIAN GUIDE BE SAFE, RESPECTFUL AND RESPONSIBLE! What’s Happening in our School Family Literacy Day Family Literacy Day takes place every year on January 27. ABC CANADA Life Literacy Foundation and Honda Canada created the day in 1999 to encourage families to read and learn together. CRS will be hosting a Family Literacy Day event, Pillowcase Bingo, the evening of March 12 and a school-based Literacy Day on March 12. Stay tuned for details. Mrs. Donaldson is also going to host a Scholastic Book Fair . It is going to be much more than 15 minutes of fun, so join us! Literacy is more than books. There are many ways to strengthen literacy skills - all it takes is practicing for 15 minutes every day . Reading, writing, playing a game, following a recipe or even singing a song all help prepare children for the challenges ahead. Learning can happen at any time, any where! Forest of Reading We are excited to inform you that our school is registered in the FOREST of READING - a highly popular recreational reading program for students from Kindergarten to Grade 8. Reading is always a high profile activity at our school but this voluntary reading program is something extra special. There are eight programs in the Forest of Reading®, a project of the Ontario Library Association, each planned for a different age group. All are designed to promote reading for enjoyment, to increase awareness of quality Canadian literature, to enhance student powers of discrimination and skill in evaluating books, and to provide opportunities to engage in discussions about books whether at school or at home. Last year over 250,000 readers across the country read and voted for the best book in each category . This is how the program works. Readers read the ten Canadian titles on the list, and then vote for their favourite (must read a minimum of 5 to be eligible to vote). Voting day is in April. We will participate in selecting the winner of the Blue Spruce Award (K to Grade 2), Silver Birch Award (Grade 3 to 6) and the Red Maple Award (Grade 7 and 8). Based on voting across the province, the best book is announced and the author is honoured with an award at the Festival of Trees™ in Toronto in May. Your child is encouraged to participate. To qualify to vote in April at least five of the ten nominated books on the shortlists must be read. In order to complete as many books as possible, students are encouraged to read at school, as well as at home. Students must have their reading confirmed and registered by their teacher or one of the other Forest® volunteers in our school.
